Today was Donna's birthday and Craig had made plans to give her a special and memorable day. It started with breakfast in bed. He was up at dawn and in the kitchen preparing the food while she slept.
He cooked up French toast, bacon, fried tomato and a hash brown. Placing the plate of food on a tray, he added a small glass of fruit juice and a mug of steaming coffee. Craig took the tray down the hallway and entered the bedroom.
Donna's eyes fluttered open when he placed the tray down on the bedside table. He leaned down and kissed her lightly on the lips, admiring how beautiful she looked in the early morning light, her lustrous dark hair splayed across the white pillows. She smiled up at him, her brown eyes bright and clear.
"Happy birthday, Babe," he said and kissed her again. This time her arms wrapped tightly around his neck and she held him close.
"Something smells good," she said and sat up. When she was comfortable, Craig put the tray on her lap and she took a moment to admire his efforts. "Thank you so much. This is awesome." She looked up at him then. "Aren't you having any?"
"I kind of ate while I was making yours."
"Well, sit down and help me eat this. I'll never be able to eat it all."
Craig nibbled on some toast while his wife tucked into some bacon and the hash brown, chasing it down with alternate sips of coffee and juice. Craig finished off her hash brown for her and the remainder of her juice. He then got up, went to the wardrobe and took out a small gift bag. Back on the edge of the bed, he handed it to Donna.
She first read the card and smiled. She looked at him, her eyes moist with emotion.
"That was beautiful," she said. "You have such an amazing way with words." Donna withdrew other items from the bag. A small box of chocolates shaped like hearts, a bottle of Armani perfume and a jewellery box. When she flipped open the box she smiled and took out a heart-shaped pendant encrusted with an emerald and tiny diamonds. Quickly she put it around her neck and fastened it. "How's it look?"
"Almost as gorgeous as the woman wearing it," Craig told her honestly.
"Flattery will get you everywhere," Donna said. "Especially on my birthday."
Craig smiled and went into the bathroom to take a shower. Clean and refreshed, he emerged dressed in a bathrobe. Donna looked him up and down with bedroom eyes.
"Plenty of time for that later," he told her and her face dropped. "Right now you need to get dressed and pack a bag."
"Really?" Her eyes lit up. "Where are you taking me?"
"Not too far, but somewhere nice where we'll be spending the night."
Donna raced naked into the bathroom and took a quick shower herself, while in the interim Craig got dressed and packed a small bag for himself. He quickly made the bed and washed up the breakfast dishes. By the time he was done his wife was busy getting dressed and packing her own gear.
"Include a bikini," he suggested.
When she was ready Craig loaded their gear into the car and they got the journey underway.
"Are you going to tell me where we're going?" Donna probed as they drove.
Craig grinned knowingly. "You'll see when we get there. All I will tell you is that you'll like it."
