"You're actually serious? You want me to go to this fucking 'clinic' and get checked out by a bunch of shrinks?"

James was grinning wide - like he'd just heard something so absurd that he couldn't get his head around it. And that grin was manic - like he had a plan of his own forming in his mind.

"James I'm not saying you 'need' to go. I'm just saying that it might help if you do. What do you have to lose? It's just that with your anger issues and all that, your sex issues, it might useful, that's all. It might help us, going forward. It might make us whole, as a couple."

Davina had spoken to Gabriel and discussed the initial capture of James. It was like a huge point that could be lost in the grandness of the rest of the scheme. And it was a small thing that if not got right, could ruin the whole plan. Getting James to a facility was key to the whole thing.

The thing was to downplay what an absolute bellend James was - take the softly softly approach, make him believe it was for the marriage. If James was to get the feeling he was being looked at seriously, as some kind of nut job then it could have the reverse affect. James's grinning was giving the impression he was looking at this as a challenge. He could easily be diagnosed as a psychopath, and a narcissist. So the way his mind worked would be to challenge everything. And if he thought that the 'silly bitch' Davina was thinking that their marriage was recoverable then, that was fine by him, but he had other ideas.

"And you know, Gabriel's company own quite a lot of facilities that deal in mental health etc. No-one need even know you're being assessed."

"Yeah I know all about Gabriel don't you worry."

The thing was that he didn't know all about Gabriel or he would know he'd already sussed him out. And that he was fucking his wife and more. But the beautiful thing was that he had literally no idea, none at all. He was a typical narcissist, who thought the world revolved around him and only him.

"So what do you want me to do - just go to one of these places and get tested or assessed or something? Really? I have to do that?"

He was strangely calm now. Strangely cooperative.

"It's just a day thing. Possibly overnight, depending on what they find. Just do it James darling. I think you'll feel better about yourself, especially if you come through with flying colours. And then we can get on with our lives."

Davina was downplaying it to perfection - she was putting in an Oscar worthy performance. And at the same time James was taking up the challenge. He didn't feel like there was anything wrong with him, even though clearly there was. And he was being what all narcissists were, a cunt. He thought he'd breeze into one of these facilities, go through their assessments and then come out the other side smiling like a madman that he'd conned them all. Gabriel had told Davina he would think this way. And he'd told her to let him. He told her just to carry the softly softly game right the way through. Once he was at one of those places, it would be job done - more or less.

"Ok. Ok I'll fucking do it, for you darling because you know how much I love you."

And he was talking shite, as usual. James didn't love Davina at all. The only person he loved was himself. And this 'challenge' was becoming a huge thing in his mind. Like it was something he had to do, to prove to himself he could beat anything that was put in front of him. This bitch Davina wanted him to get assessed, and now he was determined to beat that assessment, and prove he was normal, and then make her suffer for the indignity. It made him laugh. It made him laugh out loud to himself - especially at what he would eventually put her through after he had jumped through her hoops. Even at this stage he was of the opinion he would simply, casually walk through this assessment. He was oblivious to what was going to happen to him.

And so the first hurdle was jumped. Davina smiled to herself as well. This was like a huge 'battle' forming. But it was a battle that James had already lost, even if it felt exactly the opposite to him.
