EXTRACT FOR Paying for Sex (Rockit Reports)
Prostitution is commonly said to be the oldest profession in existence. Whether or not that is true is a question experts have wrangled over for years. Who exactly is an expert? It would depend on who you ask.
Some have called me an expert on the subject. I hesitate to accept the classification, even if I have reported extensively on the commercial sex industry around the world for many years.
In any event I do know some things about the subject, and I'll share them with you over the following pages.
The sex is a thriving component of the world economy, operating everywhere from the most cosmopolitan urban centers in the richest countries to the most out of the way sections of the most underdeveloped places.
Is it okay for men to offer money to women in exchange for sexual services? The answers given to that question are as varied as the reasons women enter the trade to begin with. Quite frankly, it's not for me to judge. Although I am for the full decriminalization of the practice, I am simply a reporter.
Why do men pay for sex? Again the reasons are varied. Perhaps the most common answer would be that it is the easiest way for many men to find a quick sexual liaison with no strings attached. When asked by a judge why he resorted to paying women for sex when he could find so many women to have sex with him for free, the American actor Charlie Sheen famously remarked: "I don't pay them for sex. I pay them to leave!"
The ethical questions behind sex work and indeed the current state of commerce in general are many, and outside of the scope of this book. "Paying for Sex" simply aims to explain things as they actually are. Questions as to the philosophy of sex work are best left for other volumes, or perhaps even other authors.
I for one don't think that the commercial sex industry is a shameful topic. It is something that abounds, creating untold income all around the world. Doesn't that alone prove that is something we should examine? At the very least we should be free to discuss it.
One day I hope we'll all be free enough from the social constraints we impose upon ourselves for various reasons to simply engage with each other for purposes of sexual pleasure on the basis of mutual agreement attraction. Unfortunately, at the moment, that's not always possible. So we find ourselves here.
In my years on this earth I've traveled near and far, covering the sex industry all around the world in print and on the internet in the process. For better or worse I have become quite knowledgeable about the global sex trade.
I wrote this with the intention of sharing what I know for the benefit of whoever is interested in reading it. It serves as an updated and expanded volume building on much shorter workers published long ago.
It should be obvious that I do not advocate that anyone violate the laws in place anywhere in the world. In fact, I don't advocate anything at all. This book was created for no other reason than to entertain the reader. Act at your own discretion and remember that "your mileage may vary."
