Annie shoved the dishwasher shut and turned it on. She and Conrad lived in the tiny home since they'd gotten back from their honeymoon five years ago and the appliance was on the blink. Half the time it wouldn't start. She pushed the button and nothing happened. Sighing heavily, she opened it and put the dirty dishes into the sink for a hand washing. She'd tell Conrad about it when he came home. She hoped he'd buy her a new one for her birthday, but he always insisted on stuff like jewelry or a fancy piece of clothing. She was the practical one and would love him more for the appliance that would wash their dishes.

Conrad walked in the front door, whistling as he made his way through the living room. "In here," Annie called as she washed the dishes at the sink. He paused as a big grin stretched across his face. He was a cowboy at heart but they lived in the city. He pulled his cowboy hat from his head and sauntered over to his wife and embraced her from behind.

"My, are you a sight for sore eyes," he said as he planted a kiss on the back of her neck.

She smiled, she couldn't help but love seeing the man. But his job at the car dealership in the parts department had him working long hours and weekends. He came home in the evenings tired and ready to hit the recliner. At twenty-eight, he was too young for such a routine. "The dishwasher is ka-put. Thus why my hands are in sudsy gross water with bits of nasty food floating around," Annie said.

"Oh, I'll pull it apart this weekend, once I've had rest," Conrad said as he stepped to the fridge.

"You know my birthday is coming up, why don't you get me a nice silver dishwasher, all fancy and stainless. I know I can't wear that out on my body, but I'll smile more if I don't have to wrinkle my hands every time we need to wash dishes," Annie said as she threw big hints at the man.

"No now. I've already ordered your birthday gift. My momma taught me never to give a lady something she'd use as a housewife for a gift. So I'm doing what I've been taught to do," Conrad said as he grinned and then turned the half-full soda bottle up drinking straight from it.
