Mona finished the display in the front of the store as the owner stood nearby and grinned, satisfied with their choice of store manager. Clept Shoes was a giant shoe store in a very popular mall and Mona was the prettiest red-head around. People came by hoping she'd be the one to wait on them, with her long red hair, her charming freckles, and the body of a model. She'd worked as a sales clerk for the past eight years and she'd received the promotion to store manager three months earlier. Smiling, she stepped back happy with the new display.

Hattie and Yolanda waited for her once the store closed at five. They made their way to the pizzeria on the other end of the mall, a favorite place for them to have supper on Friday nights.

"I have it on good authority that someone's turning the big three-oh next weekend," Yolanda said with a sheepish grin on her face.

Mona's face fell into a frown and she toyed the napkin beside her plate. "Please, it's just another day," she said being a little depressed about it.

"Just another day? It's not every day you leave your twenties and move on to the thirties," Hattie said, her dark curls bounced around her temples.

"Please, don't remind me. What have I to show for my life?" Mona asked.

"You are the manager of the largest retail shoe store in the city. That's a huge accomplishment and you have a nice salary to show for it now," Yolanda said as she widened her eyes.

"Yeah, there's that, but I have no one special to share it with," Mona said as she felt sorry for herself.

"What are we? Chopped liver?" Hattie said.

"No, of course not! But Hat, you have Arthur and a wedding date set up. Yo, you are already married and the only reason you can spend your weekends with me is because your husband is in the military and away on duty," Mona said.

Yolanda and Hattie exchanged looks. "Girlfriend, you leave it to us. By the time you've reached thirty years and one day, you won't care, trust me," Yolanda said.

Mona chuckled. "Okay, what are you planning? A week in Spain at the beach?" She lifted her brow hoping it was true but knew better. Then she laughed. "Really, it's okay. Maybe we can head to that cool seafood restaurant on the east side." She took a sip of her soda but her friends wouldn't quit looking at her with their worried expressions.

"Don't you worry your pretty little head about it," Hattie said.

"Right you are, Hattie and I have it well under control," Yolanda said.
