Kaylie walked down the darkened hallway. Behind her the thrumming beat of the band spilled from the gym, mixed with the sounds of laughter and idle chit chat.
Slowly she strolled, hand running along the lockers, the clank of the locks against the metal doors echoing as she flipped one after one.
Twenty years.
At the end of the hallway was an expansive concrete staircase that looked exactly as she remembered. Glancing back to make sure no one followed, she took the steps, one at a time, until she reached the landing half-way up. She took the U-turn, climbed the remaining stairs until she was on the second floor, staring down the long hallway, illuminated only by the red exit signs at either end.
She began walking, pausing at the second room, looking through the door window. The desks were different now, chalk boards replaced by Smart Boards, but the dingy white ceiling, the brown floor tiles, were the same as they had been two decades earlier, the last time she stood inside Freemont High School. She remembered this room ??" it's where she and Ken Snyder had first kissed, where he slipped his hand up her skirt, his finger playing along her pussy, in the back of the classroom while Mrs. Ratliff taught world history, oblivious to their antics.
She tried the door ??" it was locked ??" then moved on down the hall. She paused, leaned over and took a drink from the water fountain, the same metallic flavor she recalled from years earlier.
Halfway down the hallway she stopped at another door and looked in. Same black-topped, heavy wooden tables she remembered ??" this was the science lab. She recalled French-kissing Louis Martin here, then slapping his face when he tried cupping her right breast.
Kaylie put her hand on the knob and turned. The door opened.
She walked in, ran her fingers along the first table top, glanced to another table, where she remembered being during a school dance going on in the gym ??" much like tonight's reunion ??" as an 18-year-old senior, lying on her back while Sammy Walton felt her thighs, kissing her, promising his undying love if she would let him take her on the lab table.
She let him run his fingers up high enough to discover she wasn't wearing any panties, then laughed at him and said she wouldn't let a boy like him have her.
Kaylie sat on the table, remembering each of her three high school boyfriends ??" making out with them, their urgent requests to do more, to "make it" as they said.
She pulled her knees up to her chin, wrapped her arms around her legs, listening to the faint throbbing of the music below. The science room was directly over the gym, and she sat, listening, wondering who was there, who had filled out and grown into handsome men, good-looking woman, and which ones of her classmates had become fat, grown old before their time, worn down by work and family, which ones were married and divorced, married and wishing they were divorced, stuck in a job they hated.
That's when he stepped into the doorway.
Kaylie flinched, startled at the sudden appearance, then she recognized him ??" Louis. The years had been kind ??" he was slender, square-shouldered, with close-cropped hair, wearing dark slacks and a casual button-down shirt. Though it was too dark to see, she remembered his green, intense eyes. She smiled.
"Visiting memory lane?" he asked, folding his arms across his chest, leaning on the door frame.
Kaylie smiled. "S'pose I am."
"First time back?"
"Yeah."
Louis pushed away from the door, walked in, then sat on the table top across the narrow aisle from Kaylie.
"So you went off to become the big-time writer," Louis said.
From another person, that might have sounded sarcastic, but even now, after all these years, she understood Louis was serious, respectful, the awe evident in his voice. She shrugged, then realized he probably couldn't see her movement. "I've done all right."
He laughed. "I suppose best-selling author qualifies as all right."
"What about you, what have you been doing with your life?"
Louis sighed. "'Bout what you'd expect. I went off to college, became a lawyer, working in my dad's practice now. Junior partner."
They sat in silence for a time.
"Kay?" That was the name he used for her way back when, the only person who called her that.
"Yes?"
"You remember that night??""
"I do," she said, not wanting him to finish the sentence.
"I've thought about you often."
"I thought you married Kim Parsons?"
"Didn't last. She never quite measured up."
"Measured up?"
He slipped from the table, stepped toward Kaylie. "To you."
She laughed, though it was a nervous laugh.
"Can I ask you a question Kay?"
"Sure."
"Did you ever...I mean, were you ever serious about me?"
Kaylie took in a deep breath, held it for a while, then exhaled long and slow. She didn't reply.
"Were you ever serious about anyone?"
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"You know, everyone knew. You were a tease."
Kaylie felt her mouth drop open. She looked away, then turned back to Louis.
"I'm not sure I understand," she said.
"How often did you let me kiss you, touch you, only to pull away?"
"I...I was a kid, Louis. We both were. I just wasn't ready."
"Is that why you did the same to Ken? Sammy?"
Kaylie felt her mouth drop open again. She felt like she was eighteen, scared, trying to find her way in life, suddenly trapped by another boy who wanted to bang her, trap her here in the small town she so desperately wanted to leave.
"You guys talked about me?"
"Oh come on, Kay, don't act so incredulous. We were best friends, we were teen-age boys, what did you expect?"
She hugged her legs tighter, fought to keep a tremble from her voice.
"I...I'm sorry, I didn't mean??""
"Kay, it's been twenty years. We're adults now, you don't have to pretend."
Kay put her head down on her knees and sat for several minutes. Then she looked up toward Louis.
"I was frightened," she said, her voice little more than a whisper.
"Frightened?"
"Yes. I...you guys thought I was some sort of sex goddess or something, at least that's the way you treated me."
"That's because you were a beautiful young lady, you are a beautiful woman now."
She shrugged. "Doesn't mean I was comfortable in my own skin. I wanted to please you, to please them, but I was scared. Hell, Louis, I was still a virgin when I graduated college."
Just then two figures slipped through the doorway. The one ??" tall, wiry ??" she recognized as Sammy. The other was stocky, with a bit of a belly. It wasn't until the two had stepped to the table she recognized the man as Ken.
"Louis?"
"We thought maybe you'd like to make up for some old times," Louis said.
She put her hands down on the table behind her, pushed herself across the table, away from them.
"I'm sure you remember Sammy and Ken. Sammy manages the Feed and Hardware Store, Ken here is the assistant police chief in town."
Ken pulled a pair of handcuffs from his back pocket and held them, dangling, reflecting red from the exit light.
"Louis, what do yo??""
She didn't get the chance to finish her sentence. The three of them were on her, Louis pressing his hand against her mouth, Sammy grabbing her legs and holding them down on the table, Ken grabbing her arms, cuffing her hands. Then he whipped his belt off, looped one end around the cuffs and pulled her arms back over her head, down off the edge of the table, then lashed the other end of the belt around the crossbar at the bottom of the table legs. She was stretched out on the table, her head hanging off the edge, arms pulled overhead and down toward the floor.
She bit Louis on the hand. He pulled his hand away.
"What are you doing?" she cried as Louis grabbed her skirt and pulled it down.
Ken grabbed her blouse and ripped it open. She felt the cool air against the skin of her body, legs, heard the blouse buttons bouncing across the floor.
"What the hell?" she called.
Louis leaned over her, his face inches from hers.
"This is your chance, Kay dear. You say you were too scared, now you get to go back, see what we would have been like."
She shook her head side to side.
"Is that a no, my dear?" Louis asked. "If you really, truly wanted us to stop, just say no. We'll let you up ??" and you'll go the rest of your life always wondering."
Kaylie wanted to say no, knew she should. But something inside her wouldn't let her, something made her stay silent when she had her chance.
Someone, Sammy, she presumed, kissed her thighs, hand caressing her hips, fingers slipping inside her panties.
"Louis," she whispered.
He smiled, but there was no humor in it.
Kaylie turned away from Louis, but said nothing. Seconds passed, the only sound that of the reverberating bass from the gym below. There was nothing she could do.
Louis stepped away from the table, over to the teacher's desk, rummaging around until he picked up a pair of scissors. He stepped back to the table. Kaylie shivered at the cold hard metal against her skin, then her bra was gone, cut away, and hands were on her...
