His girl, Clarinda, publicly dumps him.
Jason is then invited to join a group, he joins the group and talks Janice.
Jason has bought Clarinda a Christmas present, one that Clarinda would have seen as a fountain pen.
Jason and Janice each see the gift as what it actually is.
