Unwittingly, Petra is drawn into The Black Rose Society, a secret organization dedicated to the flagellation arts. Always, they search for young girls to victimize, and Petra enters their murky realm through the cunning manipulations of the cruel and wealthy Miss Evelyn Talbot. Evelyn takes Petra under her wing, giving her shelter and understanding, but Petra learns too late that she must pay for these privileges with her youthful body. Under Evelyn's care, this teen-girl gives up all rights. Even her clothing is taken from her. She is stripped to the bare, shaved, and forced into becoming a bondage model. Once bound, she has no choice but to submit to the birch and the lash. Over and again, she is flogged to orgasm. Before the eyes of many, she has no choice but to writhe in naked shame.
And Petra becomes the plaything of Evelyn Talbot's associates, most notably the urbane, gray-haired Stephen Flint. Flint, like the others, loves the sight of bound and beaten girl-flesh, and he forces Petra through rigorous ordeals. He hangs her from a tree limb by her wrists, chains her to a punishment platform, and whips her mercilessly. He even allows one of his friends to send her out into the snow for exercise while she is clad in nothing but a scant loincloth.
The reader witnesses this girl being chained to ceiling rafters, staked out in the woods, and pierced and tattooed before select members of The Black Rose Society.
To further Petra's submissiveness, Evelyn takes her to Professor Bloom, a retired girls school master. Bloom subjects the girl to strict sessions of "corrective treatments" that involve her being fastened into heavy stocks, nude. Here, she must accept the birch across her bare rump, prancing on bare feet while Bloom lectures her on the proper deportment of young girls. His methods include shame, torment, and coupling with his victim sexually while he has her in the stocks.
Throughout it all, Petra learns to love her pain.
