When it comes to BDSM fantasy written from the hetero Maledom point of view, the pickings are a bit limited both in quantity and in scope. They don’t tend to go in too much for fabulously sensual billionaires [and whenever did MILLIONAIRES become too skeezy for mom-porn, for crying out loud?] and gentle, safeword, loving and consensual fantasies. Keyword there, FANTASIES. They tend to be far more harsh, forced, masculine, even cruel. This sub-genre is not unfamiliar – there are the GOR tales, the FANSADOX graphic novels, The Story of O, even the original Conan stories by R.E. Howard. More ladies than care to admit it like these fantasies too. The big problem is that most of the offerings are not terribly well done.
Enter Commander James Bondage [CJB]. The scope of his writings has shown marked growth as an author. True, there is still a large touch of the formulaic about these, but the subject matter doesn’t allow for a massive amount of variety, in much the same way as John Grisham’s lawyer novels are rather standardized. So let’s examine the standard.
Fantasy stories in which lovely ladies are forced into sexual slavery against their wills – stress again here placed on FANTASY – can only be brought about in a few ways. A society allows for slavery, a nefarious villain has methods and locations for abduction and subsequent training, a fantasy/sci-fi setting, etc. CJB is a dab hand at all of these. His early work DOES have some silly, stilted dialogue, but this improves significantly in his later stories. His greatest strength lies in an ability to describe the torturous training to which the reluctant slaves are subjected. Every strike of a paddle or whip, the strained and aching muscles held in tight bondage, the harrowing and frenzied attempts to plead with her new master from behind an oversized ballgag – all come across as vividly as an old time radio show. His historical education is evident in the scenarios he creates.
In ancient Rome, the Ottoman Middle East, Imperial China, and in antebellum America, slaveholders were often considered paragons of society and indeed were frequent in their offerings of advice articles in journals, newspapers, even training manuals. Well, suppose modern America still allowed for debt and penal slavery, and that some wealthier folks made a habit of purchasing bed slaves. Now imagine a very wealthy and cruel connoisseur of girl flesh whose skill in slave breaking and training were renowned. You now have the “BY JUDICIAL DECREE” Series. How would one go about setting up the logistics of such a world and such an operation? How would the women react and be kept in line? Does this sketch more or less outline YOUR fantasies? This is the series to read. CJB’s Master Rupert Caine is a merciless and yet somehow fair man who breaks, trains, and controls his chattel with an iron hand. It’s a standard character in BDSM literature, but it is unusually well done here.
In this initial offering in the series, we are introduced to haughty society hostess Olivia Addison who is left uncomprehendingly holding the bag when her financial fraudster of a husband disappears with an embezzled fortune. Held jointly legally responsible, she is convicted and slated for a slave auction to recoup the investor’s losses. Also on the block is a young innocent named Elenora Reilly, a flaming redhead with perfect breasts and flawless skin whose father had named her as collateral on a defaulted loan. Both are scooped up by slave agent Quentin Scales on behalf of the rapacious film mogul, Rupert Caine.
Transported in bondage to Caine on his private railway car by slave agent Scales, the two women soon stand before Caine wearing only chains and flimsy capes tied at the neck. A cowed and terrified Elenora presents herself immediately as instructed, but the arrogant Mrs. Addison attempts to assert herself, causing Caine to shock her unconscious with her control collar. Both women are taken to dungeon rooms by liveried slavegirls wearing cutaway uniforms, and Rupert Caine prepares to go to work. One will need to be broken hard, and the other will bend easily to slavery out of fear and awe of her new master – both scenarios intensely erotic to any Maledom. Over the next several installments, different sorts of women and situation present different challenges and erotic delights. These are not littles, or papered little pets, or consensual subs. Given the author’s pen name, I was not shocked to discover that this is a BDSM novel. It is set in an alternate America (?), where individuals can be enslaved for debt. In this case, the victims are a social-climbing aristocratic housewife and a sweet, eighteen year old girl, social class unspecified. The two women are purchased at a slave auction for the male protagonist, a multi-millionaire who has a fully equipped dungeon in his basement.
The story of how the two women are trained to obey their owner and also to take pleasure from the painful and ingenious trials they are subjected to is not a new one, but this book stands out from the mass of competitors because of the writing.
Unlike the great majority of “erotica” authors, Commander Bondage has a good command of English. He is able to build his alternate world by working telling details about it into the story, and more important, he can create believable characters, so that when we get to the sex scenes (which are as hot as any I have read) we are interested in what happens to the characters.
