STORY DESCRIPTION

Carla is twenty-one, married to a Harley Street surgeon ten years her senior and living a high-class social life.

The story starts with Carla being picked up from her house in a large limousine. In the car is Phaedra, a tall, dark and rather mysterious woman who seems to exercise some sort of power over our heroine. She is led, blindfold and naked, into a large room, which she senses is filled with people.

A voice begins to question her about her other life. She finds herself standing on a platform in a roomful of people she knows.

The judge explains that she is on trial. She must explain her recent lascivious behaviour to the court, on pain of punishment.

One after another people rise from the crowd to give evidence against her. They make their accusations, then she replies, giving her side of the story. Thus the book is divided into a series of flashbacks in which we trace Carla's fall from faithful wife to slave to her own desires.
