 | STORY DESCRIPTION In Nineteenth century London, no figure cast more of an alluring shadow over polite society than the Duke of Loughmore. Reviled and adored in equal quantities his exploits were legendary in his own lifetime.
Katherine Forbes here recounts how the Duke wins a bet at cards. His opponent has made an unusual wager and the duke finds that his winnings take a most attractive form.
However, for once, a woman manages to get under his skin and despite further conquests as he expands his slave-dealing empire, he finds himself drawn into a duel where his life is very much at risk.
From London to Paris and beyond he is pursued and must eventually turn and deal with a woman who threatens him like no other woman.
The story of how the duke deals with Lady Steele is played out against a background of thrilling debauchery, decadence and cruelty.

A submissive woman herself, Katherine writes superb novels of harsh Victorian discipline based around her historical research into one of the great libertines of the 19th century.
Reviews The story is well written with a finely drawn protagonist. The lead-in to the ‘encounters’ are detailed and expertly described but the description of the encounter itself (IMO) is perfunctory. I would’ve given a 5 star rating otherwise. 4 out of 5 (ParkerFN) |
