STORY DESCRIPTION Ariadne is a colony planet, which by the year 2120 is well-established as one of the ten percent of human settlements in which slavery is legal, commonly practiced and relatively free of state regulation. Sebastian Miles is a country gentleman, who at twenty-five as been fortunate to inherit a small estate and manor house, where he lives with his wife and their small establishment of serving and pleasure slaves.
His requirements are modest, met for the most part by the pretty and big-breasted Almya, an enslaved ex-model who is considerably older. His wife Henrietta is more high-maintenance, with a taste for virility-enhanced black males, two of which she keeps in cages that form one side of her bedchamber. Fortunately her father is a slave-trader, but nevertheless the drain on Sebastian's resources is considerable. His problems seem to be solved, however, by a remarkable (and improbable) lottery win, the prizes including a long holiday on the planet Slavers' World which, as the name suggests, is a galactic centre for buying, selling, modifying, enhancing and training slaves, and developing and demonstrating uses for slave labour. Sebastian begins a tour of the planet's single continent, riding in ponyslave-drawn omnibuses, enjoying the sport of inshore galley-racing, and trying his hand at steering a team of human plough-horses. His prize includes the purchase price of one slave, and the only problems of which he's aware is that he's spoilt for choice.
There are forces at work of which Sebastian is blissfully unaware. He knows that there are two humanoid alien races- the S'sith and the Folk- who own large numbers of human slaves, largely for sexual exploitation. A long-standing peace settlement enables them to trade freely with human colonies, and they are particularly active on Slavers' World. But the S'sith have a secret; they've made contact with another civilisation- still humanoid but physically repellent and with different environmental needs- that is also in desperate need of large numbers of sex-slaves. Lacking anything else to trade, the S'sith agree to meet their requirements despite the difficulties involved. They need humans with rare gene combinations that make them highly adaptable, and their customers insist that they be conceived and born naturally. The outcome is an entirely new slave-breeding programme on a remote planet that is dedicated to that purpose alone. Blissfully unaware both of these developments and the rare and desirable genes that he carries, Sebastian has been identified and earmarked as a major participant.
